COVID-19 in South Africa: 22nd June 2022

In recent weeks, the number of newly recorded daily cases for COVID-19 in South Africa have been on the decline. So much so that government is even considering a further lessening of restrictions as it pertains to face masks.

While an official announcement is yet to be made, much of the country eagerly awaits a return to how we did things before the pandemic.

For now though, restrictions like mandatory wearing of face masks indoors still applies, which brings us to the latest report from the National Department of Health (NDoH) regarding the spread of the virus.

To that end the NDoH confirms that 1 087 new cases have been recorded over the past 24 hours, with the total number of infections recorded to date now sitting at 3 986 892.

The department also notes that 20 fatalities have been recorded over the past 24 hours too, as the death toll related to COVID-19 in South Africa has reached 101 640.

Other key figures in the latest report confirm no movement in the recovery rate, which remains at 97.1 percent, while more than 25.61 million tests have been conducted to date.

As for the vaccine rollout, the past 24 hours has seen 31 207 jabs administered. As of 17:00 on 21st June 2022, a total of 36 669 717 vaccines have been administered across the country.
