Despite still being in theatres, Multiverse of Madness is now streaming

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is now streaming on Disney+ despite the fact that it is still available in theatres.

While we knew this was coming, here in South Africa the two big theatre chains – Ster-Kinekor and Nu Metro – still have the movie on their respective websites for customers to book tickets.

Multiverse of Madness launched worldwide on 6th May 2022, so it’s been around a month and a half of theatre exclusivity.

While not a concrete rule we usually expect movies to be available only in theatres for around 90 days before moving to other formats such as DVDs / Blu-rays and paid rentals. Only after this time did we traditionally see availability on streaming platforms.

Of course the pandemic has changed how all of this worked as streaming services vie for subscribers. On top of this Disney+ is one of the newest services which has had to fight to claw subscriptions from other services.

Here in South Africa it’s been just over a month since the service was launched and it has been rather rocky no console apps available, problems on other platforms and a general lack of polish from the House of Mouse.

This has been particularly irritating for South Africans as they have had to wait years for Disney+ to arrive on our shores, only for it to show up in a less than stellar state.

As we discussed around this launch the biggest draw Disney+ has is its content and this release of Multiverse of Madness so early is a great example of that.

If you’re not sold on Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness or you’re wondering if it’s worth picking up a Disney+ subscription just to watch it, you can read our launch review of the movie which is completely free from spoilers.
