Unisa: Don’t come to graduation if you have not received a new invite

The saga of graduation ceremonies at the University of South Africa (Unisa) continue after problems with invitations caused some issues.

“Unisa has learned that some students reported to the Muckleneuk Campus between Monday and Wednesday this week (27-29 June 2022) to attend graduation ceremonies. Upon investigation, it was established that some of the students were still in possession of their original invites released in March and April 2022,” a statement reads.

These older invites are no longer applicable and the university asks that all those attending, to not show up without this new version.

“Please do not report for a graduation ceremony if you have not received an invitation via your myLife e-mail account to do so. Students will receive personalised invitations to these graduation ceremonies. Students are also encouraged to check the following sources for more info on graduation ceremonies: Unisa website announcementsmyUnisa announcementsUnisa Facebook, Unisa Twitter ,” the statement continues.

While this may seem like a small clerical error in isolation, it’s the latest in a long chain of events which have plagued Unisa students trying to attend their graduation.

The latest round of Unisa graduation ceremonies were supposed to happen in late April but these were derailed by industrial action. Disruptions to graduations are nothing new and have happened multiple times this year with similar incidents in March.

The April ceremonies, however, experienced long delays and were finally restarted only this week on 27th June.

It’s these long delays, multiple problems and frustrations which make the latest invite snafu particularly grating.

On Twitter, in response to the call asking to only bring these new invites, some students have pointed out that they still don’t have them and are again waiting with no response from Unisa.

For those experiencing this problem, or any others, the following contact email is provided: gaudeamus[at]unisa[dot]ac[dot]za.
