Unisa to restart graduation ceremonies at the end of June

The University of South Africa (Unisa) has announced that graduation ceremonies will resume at the end of this month after they were disrupted by protest action.

2022 has not been the smoothest year for the university so far with several such instances of protesting happening on its campuses.

This latest disruption happened at the end of April which mirrored a similar incident in March.

It seems, however, that the university is confident to kickstart these events once again.

“Unisa is proud to announce that graduation ceremonies will resume on 27 June 2022. The first series of graduations will be in Polokwane on 27 and 28 June 2022. The second series will take place at the Muckleneuk Campus in Tshwane from 1 to 8 July 2022. The third series will take place in Cape Town from 11 to 13 July 2022. Arrangements for ceremonies in other regions will be communicated in due course,” the announcement reads.

“Students will receive a personalised invitation to their graduation ceremony. The university apologises most profusely for the inconvenience caused by the postponement of the previous graduation ceremonies.”

Despite this being on the good side of news students on Twitter were quick to point out some problems and other bugbears.

One interesting point is how they plan to fit in all the students who had their graduations postponed in the relatively short time periods mentioned above. The backlog created by the delays may mean many more students at each ceremony.

Hopefully Unisa has this in mind and is smart with its organisation.
