It looks like Sony wants to break away from Steam and Epic with its own launcher

For many, Steam is the first port of call when buying a game on PC. However, for publishers, sharing a percentage of your revenue with a storefront isn’t the best idea so many launch their own.

We’ve seen this from Ubisoft, EA, Activision Blizzard, Epic Games and now it looks like Sony could be launching a PlayStation PC launcher.

This comes following a report from Video Games Chronicle which discovered references to a PlayStation PC launcher in Sony’s latest PC port, Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered.

Beyond that, VGC also found references to PSN account linking. This further reinforces the idea that Sony could be exploring a wider ecosystem for its games.

This doesn’t come from the ether either. Earlier this year Sony Interactive Entertainment president Jim Ryan highlighted a desire to expand from one “very narrow segment of the overall gaming software market, to being present pretty much everywhere“.

Releasing a launcher for PC would also mean that paying other storefronts would be a thing of the past. With that having been said, the likes of Bethesda launched its own storefront and launcher only for that to eventually be retired in favour of a move back to Steam.

Moving to its own launcher would mean taking a risk but PlayStation games on PC are very desirable and if there is some cross-over between the PlayStation ecosystem and PC, that could be exciting.

However, Sony does take a long time to port games from PlayStation to PC so we’re tempering our expectations with this news. For now, all we really expect is a storefront and a way to launch games. As for when that will happen, we’re keeping an eye on the wires and we’ll update you when we know more.

Last week, alongside the launch of Spider-Man, Sony launched a website where gamers can purchase PlayStation titles for PC. No word on Bloodborne yet though.
