Shopify launches Collabs tool to help creators connect with merchants

While it can be difficult to discern genuine product recommendations against the backdrop of social media sponsorships and endorsements, being able to sell products online is an important revenue stream for many creators.

With this in mind, Shopify has launched a new Collabs platform that looks to make it easier for content creators to identify, interact and partner with a verified network of independent brands and products.

We are yet to explore the platform ourselves, but it looks like this is very much aimed at content creators new to the brand collaboration process and wanting to leverage their following.

To that end, those who sign up for Shopify Collabs can browse the network of brands to find ones that match up with their audience. From there a list of products can be curated and links created to insert into social media posts via LinkPop. When said link is used to purchase a product, a percentage for the transaction will go into the creator’s PayPal account.

Speaking to TechCrunch, Shopify did not that payment structures will vary from brand to brand, with the amount of followers and “influence” also playing a factor.

As such, straightforward brand endorsements could prove more lucrative, but for creators without the experience or assistance to hash out such deals, this may prove a viable alternative.

On the merchant side of things, those with existing Shopify profiles or ecommerce systems in place, can also join Collabs, selecting which of their products are available for content creators, as well as which types of creators they wish to partner with.

“With Shopify Collabs, we’re making it simple for creators to discover and partner with these brands so they can make more money and reach economic independence. In the future, Collabs will be fully integrated with Shopify, giving creators access to more parts of our platform and accelerating their journey as entrepreneurs,” added Amir Kabbara, Shopify’s director of Product, in a statement to TechCrunch.
