Xiaomi has created a robot that looks a lot like the Tesla Bot

Remember when Elon Musk showed off the “Tesla Bot” which was just a person in a morph suit? Well there is now a robot that looks a lot like Tesla’s only it’s coming from Xiaomi.

Revealed at an event this week by Xiaomi chief executive officer Lei Jun, the CyberOne is a humanoid robot that loves flowers.

Okay so the flower thing is just what we’ve seen in the presentation and a video hosted on the product page. The robot’s face is a curved OLED panel and it hears with two microphones. The robot is said to be able to identify 85 environmental sounds and 45 classifications of human emotion.

As for movement, there are 13 joints which allow for 21 degrees of movement. The upper limb actuators have an output torque of 30Nm but can go as low as 1Nm should it need to be more gentle.

The CyberOne is said to cost somewhere in the range of 600 000 to 700 000 yuan but it doesn’t appear be going into mass production just yet, according to an Engadget report. What this is then is a way to test, develop and improve a humanoid robot before unleashing it on the public.

“With AI at its core and a full-size humanoid frame as its vessel, this is an exploration of possibilities of Xiaomi’s future technological ecosystem and a new breakthrough for the company,” Jun said.

While CyberOne isn’t as nimble or flexible as Boston Dynamics’ Atlas robot, it’s interesting to see a humanoid robot aimed at the consumer market.

Last year, Dwyka Mining Services launched an enterprise version of the Boston Dynamics Spot robot. The bot is designed to improve safety at mines and reach places drones may not be able to reach.

CyberOne doesn’t seem to be as proficient at anything for now but we suspect Xiaomi will iterate and improve on its robot as the years wear on.

Robots for the home, Isaac Asimov would be terrified.
