No loadshedding this weekend, but it returns first thing Monday

  • Eskom says loadshedding will be suspended at midnight on Friday.
  • Loadshedding will return at 05:00 on Monday morning at Stage 2.
  • Eskom says that loadshedding will be suspended on Friday due to lower demand.

Despite making provisions for loadshedding at the weekend, Eskom has now changed its mind and instead suspended loadshedding for the weekend.

This is made possible thanks to lower weekend demand says Eskom. As such, loadshedding will be suspended at midnight on Friday. This means that Stage 3 loadshedding is still on the cards from 16:00 to 00:00 this evening with Stage 2 loadshedding currently in effect.

On Monday morning at 05:00, Stage 2 loadshedding will be implemented until 16:00. Thereafter Stage 3 will be in effect from 16:00 to midnight.

“Eskom will publish a further update on Sunday afternoon, or as soon as there are any significant changes,” the utility said.

The utility also announced that generating units at Arnot, Kendal, Kriel and Tutuka Power Stations have been returned to service since Thursday. As of time of writing, planned maintenance means 6 234MW of capacity is unavailable while 13 779MW is unavailable due to breakdowns.

This week Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana announced that government would take on up to 66 percent of Eskom’s R400 billion debt. This is being done with a view to allow Eskom to manage its costs more effectively as well as address arrears and other areas of the business.

Given that loadshedding has been in place for most of the month and Eskom has a propensity to announce increased stages at the last minute, we are planning for increased stages, just in case.

We urge you to check out the popular loadshedding tracking app EskomSePush for Android and iOS to stay up to date with new developments.
