vivo Y22 launches in South Africa

  • The latest mid-range vivo device, the vivo Y22, has been launched in South Africa.
  • Mobile gaming seems to be a selling point of the device with silicon and features aimed at improved gameplay performance.
  • The device is available right now at selected outlets and retails for R3 999.

Chinese smartphone manufacturer vivo has launched a new device in its mid-range Y series in South Africa – the vivo Y22.

The launch of the Y22 marks the latest upgrade in the Y series, replacing the Y21. Last month the company launched two other devices locally, including the vivo V25 5G and the 25e.

“The Y22 is built on the strengths and successes of its popular sister phone, the outgoing Y21, and remains a cool and beloved pick in the mid-range smartphone category,” said Tony Shi, country manager at vivo South Africa.

“The phone has a competitive edge over similar phones in the category. Its beautiful design, sharp and clear photography, large display and powerful performance offer the consumer a complete entertainment experience,” Shi enthused.

Specifications and performance

The Y22 sports the MTK Helio G85 silicon, MediaTek’s mainstream 8-core chip for Android smartphones built for smoother gaming performance on a 6.55-inch HD+ display.

The device has 64GB of storage, expandable to 1TB with 4GB RAM running Android 12. In terms of battery, the phone has a 5000mAh battery with 18W fast charging capabilities.

To offer an immersive gaming experience, the Y22 has an Ultra Game Mode 2.0 with Do Not Disturb, Brightness Lock, Game Picture-in-Picture and Hyper Engine Game Technology to ensure the device is controlled during gaming to ensure uninterrupted play.

The phone also has multi-Turbo 5.5 which optimizes resource scheduling and utilization efficiency from core dimensions (including CPU/GPU/memory/IO) to reduce lag, improve system smoothness, and improve performance stability.

vivo says the Y22 has an IP5X/IPX4 rating to make it dust and water-resistant.

Camera

The Y22 has a 50MP and 2MP dual rear camera setup for sharper photos.

The 50MP main rear camera features full HD resolution and professional-grade light intake which according to vivo is capable of capturing “richer” night images.

The 2MP macro camera can achieve a close focus distance of 4cm to enlarge details.

Additionally, the Y22 has an 8MP soft-light front camera for clear selfies. Both rear and front cameras are fitted with the Super Night Camera mode to help take clear pictures in low light.

The rear camera has the Stylish Night Filter mode to beautify night pictures whilst the front camera has Aura Screen Light mode for studio-style illumination even in unfavourable light conditions. Both cameras have a portrait mode.

Pricing and availability

The Y22 comes in two new colours in South Africa, including Metaverse Green and Starlit Blue.

Metaverse Green has diamond patterns and a distinctive metallic sheen to make the device stand out. This option complements the phone’s 2.5D curvature body with a new CMF (Color, Materials & Finish) design. The back of the device has an anti-fingerprint matte material.

The Y22 is available at major retailers and telecommunications partners in South Africa right now at the price of R3 999.
