Wakanda Forever breaks records on African opening weekend

  • Black Panther: Wakanda Forever launched worldwide this past weekend.
  • While it has seen success around the world, several African regions report record breaking sales at the box office.
  • The cast and crew recently visited Nigeria.

The latest blockbuster in the MCU is Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and, just like its professors Black Panther from 2018, this movie is bringing audiences to the cinema, especially here in Africa.

“In West Africa, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever became the biggest industry opening weekend of all time with a box office tally of ₦240m. In East Africa the film earned Kes 25m, earning the titles of both the biggest opening weekend box office of 2022 and the biggest post-pandemic opening to date,” a press release from Disney reads.

“In Southern Africa, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever brought in R16.5m respectively, becoming the biggest opening weekend box office of 2022. 2018’s Black Panther remains the number 1 film of all time in both East and West Africa, and the number 2 film of all time in Southern Africa.”

While we can’t say for Southern Africa has a whole, we can comment on South Africa where the highest grossing film is likely The Lion King 2019. We say likely as the box office numbers from the previous few years have probably not been adjusted for inflation, which is a rather important factor in all facets of finance right now.

Both Black Panther movies, and The Lion King are flanked by other Disney properties like Avengers: Endgame and Avengers: Infinity War as contenders for the number one spot, though we’d need Disney itself to give us an update on the lifetime performance of all of those features, which likely won’t happen for a while as Wakanda Forever is only a few days old at this point.

Outside of South Africa, Disney has brought the continent a taste of the Hollywood treatment as the cast and crew visited Lagos in Nigeria for a special premiere event earlier this month.

“Johannesburg also hosted the South African Premiere of the film on Wednesday 9 November, and welcomed Connie Chiume (Mining Tribe Elder ‘Zawavari’), Dr Ernest Khalema (Language and Cultural Consultant on the film) and local artists from the soundtrack on Wednesday, 9 November 2022,” Disney adds.

Going by the proud proclamation that this is the “#1 movie in the world” according to a new video released by Marvel Entertainment below, it seems that there’s yet another smash hit for the MCU.

As for what the movie is actually like to watch, check out our spoiler-free review right now.
