Iron Galaxy pulls an Arkham Knight on The Last of Us Part 1 PC port

  • The Last of Us Part 1 on PC has been ported incredibly poorly with performance issues and crashes plaguing players on day one.
  • The port was done by Iron Galaxy which was behind the infamously bad PC port of Batman: Arkham Knight.
  • Naughty Dog has said that it will address the issues in upcoming patches.

With The Last of Us HBO series having just concluded, we’re sure PlayStation was looking forward to another surge in the property’s popularity with the launch of the PC port of The Last of Us Part 1.

After a delay, the PC port which was done by Iron Galaxy has been released and, things aren’t great.

If the name Iron Galaxy sounds familiar that’s because it was the studio behind the port of Batman: Arkham Knight on PC. That release was awful with performance issues and bugs ruining the experience for many. The experience was so bad that it was pulled from all online stores after release. The game was eventually patched out the wazoo but it seems that in eight years, Iron Galaxy is still making the same mistakes.

Over on Steam, The Last of Us Part 1 currently has a “Mostly Negative” overall review status. Worse still, only 36 percent of reviews are positive.

Much like previous Sony releases for PC, The Last of Us needs to build shaders which reportedly takes hours depending on your system. A number of users have also reported frequent crashes to the desktop even on high-spec systems.

Naughty Dog has acknowledged the problems players are bumping into and has also outlined a number of known issues.

The developer is currently investigating the following problems it knows of, namely:

  • Loading shaders takes longer than expected,
  • Performance and stability is degraded while shaders are loading in the background,
  • Older graphics drivers lead to instability and/or graphical problems,
  • Game may be unable to boot despite meeting the minimum system requirements,
  • A potential memory leak.

“The Last of Us Part I PC players: we’ve heard your concerns, and our team is actively investigating multiple issues you’ve reported. We will continue to update you, but our team is prioritizing updates and will address issues in upcoming patches,” Naughty Dog wrote in a Twitter thread.

Players who encounter problems have been directed to submit a support ticket at this link.

We were really looking forward to this port but given these problems, it may be best to wait for a few patches and fixes to be issued before diving in.
