The Revenant producer to make live-action Cyberpunk 2077

  • A live-action offering set in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe is in the works, confirms the game’s developers.
  • This is after a partnership with the production company behind The Revenant, Mr Robot and Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why.
  • Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty has now sold over 3 million copies.

Hot on the heels of the hugely successful launch of the Phantom Liberty expansion for Cyberpunk 2077, developers CD Projekt Red have announced a new partnership that will bring the world of Night City to a new universe.

According to the Investor Relations X account of CD Projekt Red, the developer has now teamed up with Anonymous Content, a global film production firm that has worked on major Hollywood blockbusters like Leo DiCaprio’s The Revenant, as well as critically successful projects like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and streaming hits like 13 Reasons Why (Netflix) and popular series like Mr Robot.

So far the only information revealed stipulates that it will be a live-action project, but nothing else has been revealed in terms of the project’s scope, or when it will see the light of day. However, given the size of Anonymous Content, it is unlikely that it will simply be a live-action short film, and will probably take the guise of a series.

This would be the second time the Polish gamemaker has teamed up with a production house to make a series. The first saw CD Projekt hand over the rights to Night City to Japan’s Studio Trigger, producers of numerous highly acclaimed anime works including Kill la Kill and Gurren Lagan.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was the output of that initial partnership, which was quickly scooped up by Netflix and turned out to be a major win for the developers and the series as a whole. Whatever live-action effort is in the works from Anonymous, it will surely be weighed up against Edgerunners.

With the story of Cyberpunk 2077 now complete as of the end of Phantom Liberty, which has been confirmed by CD Projekt, and a new Cyberpunk game slated for some time in the future fans of the world of Mike Pondsmith might only be getting new sights and sounds of Night City through expanded universe offerings like Edgerunners and the upcoming live-action project.

Either way, the universe has proven to be wildly successful for CD Projekt, with the latest expansion reportedly selling 3 million copies as of Thursday, a week after launching. In total, 25 million people have bought the base game.

The only question now is: who are they going to get to play live-action Johnny Silverhand?
