Instagram creators can train an AI persona to chat to fans

  • Meta is rolling its AI Studio product out to US users.
  • The product allows folks to create a persona to chat to or create a persona that fans can chat to.
  • The product makes use of Meta’s Llama 3.1 AI model.

Many celebrities and high-profile influencers hire a person or a team to manage their social media accounts and respond to fans. Now, Meta is rolling out a way for these folks to distance themselves even further from their fans, with an AI bot.

Meta’s AI Studio is now available here or via the Instagram ap and allows users to build their own AI character. The product is currently only available in the US. Users can create a character based on their interests, but the use case we’re interested in is the Creator AI which claims to be “an extension of you”.

“With AI Studio, Instagram creators can set up an AI as an extension of themselves that can quickly answer common DM questions and story replies. Whether it’s sharing facts about themselves or linking to their favorite brands and past videos, creator AIs can help creators reach more people and fans get responses faster,” writes Meta.

Creators will be able to customise their AI persona based on their Instagram content and can include links they’d like the persona to share as well as topics to avoid. Importantly, fans will know they’re chatting to an AI as messages sent using this method will be clearly labelled.

Creators can switch the AI on and off as they please and even choose who the bot responds to.

“Creators like Chris Ashley, Violet Benson, Don Allen and Kane Kallaway have already created their own AIs. You can check them out by tapping the Message button with the ✨icon on their Instagram profile,” reports Meta.

AI Studio is built on Llama 3.1, Meta’s latest AI model so users are getting the best experience. However, how well that experience is received will only be revealed over time.

The fact that the AI creators build is based on their Instagram content may not bode well for some creators.

Sadly, over the last few months a number of creators including Herschel Beahm (Dr Disrespect) and Ava Kris Tyson have been accused of and admitted to sending inappropriate messages to minors. If AI Studio uses Instagram content to train personas, we suspect some characters may out their creators as predators.

As mentioned, AI Studio is only available to US users but you can read more about the product here.
