If you have been on YouTube in recent weeks you may have noticed an ad for the Museum of Illusions, which is set to open its doors in Johannesburg. That opening has just happened, and the Museum of Johannesburg has begun accepting visitors.

This massive exhibition has popped up in a major cities across the globe, with the Johannesburg iteration being the 53rd. Past cities to feature it include Dubai, Chicago, New York, Paris, Istanbul, Milan, Shanghai, Cairo, Kuala Lumpur, and Dallas.

Organisers shared that the Johannesburg location is in Rosebank. Specifically found between the The Zone at Rosebank and The Firs. “The Museum of Illusions Johannesburg is located just above Hamleys, across the bridge from Spur, and next door to EGG,” organisers shared in a release with Hypertext.

“The concept first launched in Zagreb, Croatia in 2015 and soon became a global phenomenon with over 12 million people having visited the museums to date, and it is easy to see why. No two museums are the same, with each facility taking visitors on a memorable sensory journey through mind bending installations that leverage art, science, maths and psychology in a unique way,” it added.

The organisers explained that over 60 illusions feature at the Johannesburg location, and visitors are encouraged to interact and experiment with the exhibits that make use of optical illusions, visual tricks, and hands-on interactive displays. Visitors are also free to capture their experiences on their phones, as well as share them on social media.

While tickets are available to purchase at the door, starting at R150 for children between four and 12 years old, and R190 for adults, for larger groups, booking online in advance is advised.
