R1.8m grand prize up for grabs in 2024 LG webOS Hackathon

  • LG has issued a call for entries for the webOS Hackathon for 2024.
  • There are cash prizes up for grabs for developers who create a lifestyle or gaming app with extra points for AI implementation.
  • The finalists will present their apps to LG executives in Seoul, South Korea.

The LG webOS Hackathon is happening again this year and the call for entries has been made.

As you may be aware, webOS is the platform on which LG’s smart TV‘s run. The operating system makes it easier for developers to create apps for LG TVs that utilise the full feature suite of the South Korean manufacturer’s TVs.

For this year’s hackathon, LG is looking to focus on lifestyle and gaming services. The company says that incorporating AI into the mix will earn participants additional points. We suspect this means calling to AI in the cloud rather than running AI on the TV itself, even though the latter would be mighty impressive.

As for prizes, LG is offering up three cash prizes for three winners:

  • 1st Place – $100 000 (~R1.8 million),
  • 2nd Place – $80 000 (~R1.4 million),
  • 3rd Place – $50 000 (~R900 000).

In order to stand the best chance of winning, developers will need to showcase the following qualities:

  • Innovation – Showcase extraordinary concepts that embody LG’s ‘Life’s Good’,
  • Design – Create a stunning, intuitive UX [user experience] that enhances the LG lifestyle experience,
  • Technology – Demonstrate technical excellence that elevates user interaction and enjoyment,
  • Integration – Seamlessly blend your app with LG webOS, creating a unified lifestyle ecosystem,
  • Impact – Develop apps that enrich, entertain, and inspire, aligning with LG’s lifestyle,
  • Family – Create engaging games that bring families together and promote a joyful, connected lifestyle,
  • Presentation – Deliver a compelling demo that highlights how your app promotes the ‘Life’s Good’ ethos,
  • Compliance – Adhere to guidelines and maintain high standards that reflect LG’s lifestyle values.

“LG webOS Hackathon 2024 aims to attract creators worldwide who are building lifestyle solutions,” said Chris Jo, senior vice president of platform business at LG Home Entertainment Company. “LG is committed to engaging with the gaming community on a global scale, partnering with developers to nurture the next generation of talent using LG’s developer platform.”

Entries for the LG webOS Hackathon close on 26th July. Once entries have closed, entrants will be invited to a webinar where they will learn more about the webOS API and additional details about the content. Apps can be built on Flutter or web.

Thereafter, entrants will have until 26th August to submit their app, scenario and demo video. Finalists will be selected to present their idea to LG’s top executive in Seoul, South Korea on 27th September.

You can submit your entry here.
