DHET calls for NSFAS board nominations

  • True to her word, Nobuhle Nkabane has called for nominations for the NSFAS board of directors.
  • Nominees must have a Master’s degree at a minimum and experience in one of several fields.
  • Nominations must be submitted along with a CV and letter of consent by 3rd September.

Earlier this month, newly appointed head of the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), Nobuhle Nkabane, signalled her intent to hire a new board of directors for the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS).

This after years of maladministration, failures and corruption plagued the scheme under the oversight of former Minister, Blade Nzimande. Earlier this year, Nzimande dissolved the NSFAS board of directors but Nkabane said she’d re-establish it shortly after taking office.

True to her word, the minister has today published a call for nominations for a new board of directors at NSFAS.

The minister has called for names of persons to be submitted for consideration. At a minimum, nominees need to hold a Master’s degree and must have a proven track record and experience in finance, law, economics, science (both social and natural), public administration, governance, engineering or higher education.

Aside from those stipulations, there aren’t many other requirements to take a seat on the NSFAS board. With that having been said, DHET has outlined that the members should be:

  • “broadly representative of the higher education system
  • have knowledge of higher education and appreciate its role in meeting the reconstruction and development needs of our society and economy
  • has expertise in the sectors outlined above
  • is representative in terms of race, gender and disability.”

Nominations along with a CV and letter of consent should be emailed to matjane[dot]k[at]dhet[dot]gov[dot]za or can be posted to the address below:

The Director General: Higher Education and Training for the attention of Ms. K Matjane

Submissions must be made by 3rd September.

Hopefully a new board of directors can bring a semblance of order to the beleaguered financial aid scheme.
