- Reports suggest the next Watch SE that Apple launches will be aimed at younger consumers.
- The forthcoming model is said to feature a wider array of colours, as well as a design with more plastic components.
- Apple is expected to announce the plastic Watch SE alongside a number of new devices in September.
Next month Apple is expected to announce a flurry of new devices, with the latest model of iPhone set to lead the charge. On the wearable side of things, new devices are expected too, with a Watch SE heavily rumoured.
More details on the forthcoming Watch SE have been shared in recent weeks, such as the fact that it will feature far more plastic components than previous iterations.
The latest information to surface, per Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, is that the plastic Watch SE is designed to be more “kid-friendly”, as well as featuring a far wider “array of colours” than spotted previously on the Watch SE lineup.
As The Verge pointed out, this could make the next “affordable” wearable from Apple one of the most interesting in years, as it means its hardware in this segment is being targeted at an entirely new demographic of user.
Provided the pricing is indeed affordable by everyone else’s standards and not just what the Cupertino-based company thinks, it could indeed be a winner, especially as Apple still dominates on the premium end of the smartwatch segment.
As reported by research firm IDC in June, “global shipments of wearable devices grew 8.8% year over year in the first quarter (1Q24) to 113.1 million units.” Despite its dominance, interestingly, “Apple Watch shipments declined 19.1% year over year.”
As such, a new affordable smartwatch made with kids in mind may be a move to secure a much needed increase in sales. With the festive season also set to follow the next September-slated Apple consumer product showcase, there may be plenty of kids who want their parents to snap up a plastic Watch SE for them.
Much like it has been able to do with iPad in recent years, Apple may be looking to diversify its wearables lineup to appeal to the wallets of more consumers.
We won’t have to wait long to see what Apple has been working on, with the next event tipped by many to happening either on or around 10th September, as was the case last year. Next month will be a busy month too, with IFA 2024 taking place in Berlin, and Huawei also reported to have an event in the works.
