- The venerable Murray Park Library of Malvern, Johannesburg, is set to receive a number of large-scale upgrades.
- First opened in 1956, the facility will have a second floor and other large-scale expansions.
- This includes an e-learning centre, state-of-the-art library, meeting rooms and solar panelling.
The 67-year-old Murray Park Library located in Malvern, Johannesburg is getting a major facelift from the City of Johannesburg’s Community Development Department that will see the venerable facility expanded and long-awaited digital learning amenities.
According to the official documents from the Johannesburg Development Department, found here, the Murray Park Library will be upgraded in two phases – the first phase will see new foundations laid out, and the second will see the relatively small building upgraded into a large two-story facility.
Phase 1 has already begun, with images of the foundation being dug up as of 25th August 2024.
The first floor of the renewed library will “accommodate a teenage section, activity centre, e-learning area, and additional facilities.” More parking areas will be added to the exterior of the facility, as well as new landscaping sections, paving, and lighting.
Sustainability is top of mind with the upgrades, and Johannesburg says that provisions for solar panels, upgraded power capacity and new facilities are to be made available for persons with disabilities.
“The upgraded Murray Park Library will serve as a dynamic community resource, offering world-class library and information services to residents of all ages,” the City says in the documents.
“We are excited to revitalise Murray Park Librart, a cherished landmark that has served our community for over six decades,” said Johannesburg’s Community Development executive manager for project implementation Siyabonga Genu.
The Murray Park Library was first opened in 1956, but in the next few years, the building will see the addition of around 2 000 square meters of additions, including a state-of-the-art library space, study area, meeting rooms and other services.
