How to tune into tonight’s Made by Google event

  • The live stream for this evening’s Made by Google 2024 event kicks off at 19:00 local time.
  • Google has already teased four new Pixel 9 devices, including a foldable.
  • The company will also be showcasing genAI-powered features for the new devices via Gemini.

Tonight the latest Made by Google event is set to take place at 19:00 South African time.

The company will be focusing primarily on its new Pixel 9 lineup of smartphones, which includes four models – the Pixel 9, 9 Pro, 9 Pro XL, and 9 Pro Fold.

Whenever a Made by Google event rolls around, it is always a little bittersweet, especially as the company’s mobile hardware is not sold in South Africa in an official capacity.

While that does not look like it will change in terms of the Pixel 9 series, this event is of interest given the preamble from Google as regards Gemini, it’s generative AI platform designed to compete with the likes of ChatGPT and Apple Intelligence.

As such, Google is preparing to showcase a number of features powered by Gemini that will be available on the Pixel 9 series, and potentially filter through to other Android phone makers down the line. Given the strong relationship that Google has been fostering in the mobile industry of late, this may include Samsung with Galaxy AI, and OPPO with its AI Phone too.

For now we will have to wait to see what Google’s plan is with Gemini, particularly as it pertains to making its functionality available on devices outside of the Pixel ecosystem.

For those wanting to tune into the event, there is one of two ways to do so. The first is the official Made by Google YouTube channel, which has published a placeholder for tonight’s live streamed event.

The other method is to simply come back to this post at 19:00 tonight when the live stream begins, as we have embedded the video for the keynote below.
