SPEEDRUN – Eskom promises loadshedding-free Summer

As the country exits a particularly cold Winter, the prospect of Summer to end 2024 is highly anticipated.

While the change of season is welcome, it also means that the prospect of loadshedding looms large. At least that was the case previously, with Eskom this week noting that a loadshedding-free Summer was highly likely.

“Our view is that if we keep the unplanned losses below 13 000MW, we should have a load shedding free summer,” explained Eskom CEO, Dan Marokane, during his Summer Outlook briefing.

“At worst, we anticipate that in the event that unplanned losses reaches up to 15 500MW, we will at most experience Stage 2 [load shedding],” he added.

Whether what the CEO has outlined will come to fruition, the prospect of a loadshedding-free Summer is indeed pleasing news. Now it is up to Eskom and other government entities to ensure it follows through on the promises, as South Africans have been let down on more than one occasion in the past when it comes to loadshedding.

Along with the promises of a loadshedding-free Summer, this morning’s SPEEDRUN roundup features stories involving an upcoming iPhone event, LG opening up its local online store, the prospect of a PS5 Pro launch, and meteorites in the Eastern Cape.
