X tells employees they’re leaving San Francisco HQ

  • X (formerly Twitter) employees have been informed that their headquarters in San Francisco will close in a few weeks.
  • They received a communication from CEO Linda Yaccarino.
  • The communication comes three weeks after Elon Musk threatened to move both X and SpaceX to Texas.

In the middle of last month, Elon Musk reacted strongly to the passing of a law in California (AB 1955), which prohibits the creation of any mechanisms that would disclose a student’s sexuality without their consent. While the law pertains to the education field, Musk used it as motivation to push moves of the headquarters of two of his companies, X and SpaceX, to Texas.

Several operations for SpaceX have already migrated to the largest State in the US, but it now looks like the same is happening at X too.

This as X CEO, Linda Yaccarino, has reportedly sent a communication to employees that its headquarters in San Francisco will close in the “next few weeks”, per The New York Times (paywall).

While it remains to be seen whether a move to Texas is on the cards, for now, employees will remain in the State of California.

More specifically when the X (formerly Twitter) HQ closes, which has been occupied by the company since the social media platform’s founding in 2006, employees have been informed that they will make use of “a shared engineering space in Palo Alto” which is also being used by the xAI team. Some employees will be moved to other “locations in San Jose” the communication from Yaccarino explained.

Whether a hybrid or remote working model will be implemented for certain teams is unclear for now, but Musk has made his feelings known on remote work when it comes to Tesla employees in the past.

As such, a similarly “hardcore” approach which has been advocated by Musk since acquiring Twitter as it was known at the time, will likely remain in place.

As Engadget points out, despite Musk wanting to move operations to Austin, Texas only a few weeks ago, the head of X has previously shared his position on the HQ of the business, and that it should remain in San Francisco.

While his post last year is quite definitive, as we have seen in recent years, Musk is quite happy to make an about-face.
