Recently we brought you the news that LEGO would be releasing a new large scale Batmobile, in the form of the classic 60s version. Its price tag of £129.99 / $149.99 will buy you 1 822 pieces and the rumour on the street is that it will be available as soon as 1st October.
But that’s almost a month away – what if you want to build a Batmobile right now? Thankfully there are quite a few options from LEGO with sets still available on shelves to meet any budget.
On the topic of budget, this set is arranged from cheapest to most expensive.
76264 Batmobile Pursuit: Batman vs. The Joker
Price: $26.99 / €26.99 / £20.99 / R479
Piece count: 54
Our smallest Batmobile comes to us today from LEGO’s 4+ name. As you may have guessed by the name, this subtheme focuses on a much younger audience. That’s why there are so few pieces in this set despite the price suggesting there would be more.
The Batmobile is built on one large chassis piece that makes it easier for the target audience to build, which is why this one looks so blocky, even for a LEGO set.
Despite this, for some reason, we still like the look of this vehicle. Maybe it’s because the squared off appearance gives it a classic muscle car look, or maybe it’s just nice to see an original Batmobile design, as simple as it may be.
It’s also a good way to get the younger kids building ASAP.
76224 Batmobile: Batman vs. The Joker Chase
Price: $47.99 / €47.99 / £42.99 / R839
Piece count: 438
Based on the Burton Batmobile, this is the latest attempt from LEGO to recreate Michael Keaton’s ride. Once again we get Batman and the Joker as the only two minifigures, but but that can be forgiven as this set does so much right.
Aside from being such a close match to what we see in the movie, this set also has a hidden feature. Turn a black gear on the side of the car and the two guns (LEGO calls them “blasters”) will pop up from the body of the Batmobile. This sends two LEGO plates flying off which is not only fun, but accurate to the movie. We’re still not sure why Batman does this, leaving parts of the Batmobile scattered around Gotham, but anyway.
The only thing that would make this Batmobile better is if it could split into three – another trick from the movie for the Batmobile to get through a narrow alley. This trick, the Batmissile, has been pulled off at this scale by members of the community, so we’re sure LEGO could do it in a retail set.
For now this is still a fantastic Burton Batmobile that we can recommend.
76274 Batman with the Batmobile vs. Harley Quinn and Mr. Freeze
Price: $59.99 / €59.99 / £54.99 / R1 099
Piece count: 435
This one caused a real stir in the community. Not only did LEGO choose to release this set in dark blue instead of black, but the price here is also very unfavourable. Not that it has less pieces than the previous entry on the list, but it costs notably more. On top of this the minifigure selection isn’t great, missing out on many favourites from the beloved Batman: The Animated Series.
Firstly, the colour is a nice changeup from black and, if you really want to go that way, we’ve made it easy for you to build your own.
Secondly, on the top of the minifigures… yeah it is a missed opportunity. Different selection, or higher quality figures, would have gone a long way to justify the price of the set.
Those two problems aside, this is still a really nice Batmobile. It looks and feels solid and the building experience shows you some smart tricks that the folks at LEGO had to pull off to capture some of the unique shaping of this vehicle.
Maybe wait for a sale on this one, if you aren’t building it in black from scratch.
42127 The Batman – Batmobile
Price: $99.99 / €99.99 / £89.99 / R1 899
Piece count: 1 360
We have to mention at the top that this is the only set on this list that is retired. For LEGO newcomers, this means that LEGO is no longer producing this one at its factories.
Despite this, you should still be able to find this one around if you look. For a few reasons we’ll get into, this set wasn’t particularly popular when it was being made. Because of this old new stock is still floating around.
The LEGO community didn’t like this one because it doesn’t look particularly close to the Batmobile we saw in the 2022 movie. This is, partly, because of the fact that this is a Technic set. Again for newcomers; Technic is a building environment that uses gears, liftarms and other mechanically-minded pieces. Regular LEGO, on the other hand, uses bricks, plates and tiles.
The trade-off here is that Technic sets are usually on the larger side while using less pieces. This Batmobile, for example, is comparable in size to the last Batmobile on this list, despite costing much less.
The other big problem the community had with this set is that of colour. LEGO included two lighting bricks in this set, both of which are wrong. One is yellow and one is red, both of which are not accurate to the blue lighting that this Batmobile is famous for.
All of this aside, we still like this set. It’s fun to build, fun to play with and the community has pulled off some miracles with this thing. Check out Rebrickable to see how, by only using the pieces in this set, you can replicate almost any Batmobile ever produced.
76240 Batmobile Tumbler
Price: $269.99 / €269.99 / £229.99 / R4 499
Piece count: 2 049
Our final item on the list is a huge recreation of Nolan’s Batmobile. This mammoth set even replicates the “in board” front wheels, which is one part of this very unique version.
The all-black look is broken up by some tasteful gold pieces and the result is an imposing piece for any collection.
While we haven’t build this set specifically, we did build the earlier version from 2014. We’ve seen from many reviews that this newer one retains the involved building experience with the only downside being some of those flaps and small elements that can easily be knocked off. Though, as a display piece, we have to imagine that most people are building this one and putting it on the shelf.
This newer version also includes a dynamic display stand so you can get some more lively options out of your Tumbler.
