Where to park for free in Cape Town for Saturday’s Springboks game

  • Saturday’s revenge match will see the Springboks play the All Blacks again in Cape Town after a bitter fight in Johannesburg.
  • Cape Town’s Mayor says that a number of public centres have been opened to allow ticket holders to the match to park and ride shuttles to the stadium for free.
  • The match starts at 17:00 but the final shuttles on the way back from the stadium depart at 21:30.

The City of Cape Town will be offering free parking and ride services for Saturday’s Springboks versus All Blacks game for the Castle Lager Rugby Championship game. This initiative will likely help out with some of the congestion and queue times ahead of the match where a sold-out DHL Stadium is expected.

Over 52 000 people were on hand the last time the four-time world champion Springboks played at the stadium, in a game against Wales in 2022. This will be the first time since 2017 that the Bokke go up against the New Zealand team in Cape Town.

Kick-off for the game is at 17:00, as per SA News.

“To support this major event, the city is pleased to announce an expanded and free MyCiTi shuttle service for spectators,” explained Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis.

These services will cover attendees from Century City, the University of Cape Town, Cape Town International Convention Centre, Thibault Square and Civic Centre stations. The first shuttle from all pick-up points will depart at 12:00.

Free parking will be available at the Civic Centre – around 475 parking bays for fans with tickets on a first-come, first-served basis from 11:00.

Meanwhile, more free parking will be made available on Hertzog Boulevard and Civic Road, and a shuttle services will run of the University of Cape Town until 16:45. Ticket holders will be able to park for free at the Upper Campus.

Around 500 more free parking spaces will be available via Century City Steelbridge E-Parking for ticket holders. On street parking in the CBD will be available from 13:00.

The last return bus from the stadium to pick-up points leaves at 21:30 after the game.

“With the game sold out, we anticipate our roads will be congested on match day. But working with the event organiser, we have provided alternatives to single-occupancy vehicles to ensure people avoid being stuck in traffic,” added Hill-Lewis.

“We would like to encourage spectators to make use of the park and ride system to alleviate the pressure on the roads,” said Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.

“Illegally parked vehicles will be fined and/or towed away. We are deploying our safety and security personnel to work with SAPS in taking care of safety at this event,” Smith added.

The City of Johannesburg also offered free transport to Ellis Park stadium just a week prior for an earlier clash between the Springboks and the All Blacks that ended in the South African side earning the victory. Attendees to the match said that the public transport offered was of a high quality and thanked PRASA for the upgraded infrastructure.
