Far Cry 4 is officially the highest game ever played

I know it’s just a publicity stunt, but I must admit it’s a pretty good one: Ubisoft has taken a Far Cry 4 superfan up to the peak of Kala Patthar, a mountain close to Everest, and let him play Far Cry 4 for 79 minutes at a height of 18 569 feet above sea level, thereby unlocking the achievement for the “Highest Altitude Videogame Console Session” as awarded by the Guinness World Records people.

That makes Far Cry 4 the highest game ever, at least in terms of actual altitude. I’m sure there are others that qualify in an entirely different way, but I won’t talk about those.

The lucky gamer to get taken up the mountain was William Cruz, a 23 year old from Provo, Utah. He won the “Gaming Journey of a Lifetime” contest that Ubisoft held, and together with a support team of 15 people made up of sherpas, a video crew and “a train of yaks” he made it to the peak where he played Far Cry 4.

The official press release says Cruz played on an unnamed console for a total of 79 minutes, in wind gusting at up to 40km/h and temperatures that dropped from -3°C to -8°C. They don’t say whether the length of time he played was influenced by the conditions, but they probably did.

Call me unadventurous, but I’d have preferred to play the game for longer, in a nice warm bungalow with buckets of hot chocolate at my disposal, but then that wouldn’t reflect the game’s Himalayan-esque environments or the verticality of its level design.

Still, it’s a cool record and a rather imaginative publicity stunt to promote Ubisoft’s latest Far Cry, so kudos to the team that came up with it.

Far Cry 4 is almost upon us: it’s out on the 18th of November for PC, PlayStation 3/4 and Xbox 360/One.
