Never cut yourself shaving again with this crowdfunded laser razor

Two incredibly smart inventors have started a Kickstarter to fund a high-tech razor designed to take the pain out of shaving entirely, because it uses a laser and not a blade to cut human body hair.

The project kicked off on the 21st of September, and within two days had exceeded its modest goal of just $160 000. Now, six days later, it’s attracted enough enthusiastic customers to approach the million dollar mark.

If you’re hoping to get in on the action on the cheap, as I was this morning when I found out about it, you’re too late: both early bird specials are gone, and if you want one you’re looking at a minimum contribution of $189. At today’s dismal exchange rate, that’s R2 655.38.

The reason this excites me is I have a beard, not because I love facial hair but because I utterly loathe shaving since it’s proven to be incredibly uncomfortable no matter what I do.

But with the Skarp Lazer Razor, there is no blade to scrape along your skin and thus there’s no irritation. Rather, as you pull the device’s head along your face (or wherever), the laser on its business end fires every time it comes into contact with hair, severing it. Because the head doesn’t have a sharp edge, there’s no scraping involved and absolutely zero risk of cuts.

The genius of the Skarp Lazer Razor is that it uses the inventors’ discovery that the presence of a specific “chromophore” in all human hair, regardless of the owner’s race, gender or age, allows it to be cut when hit by a specific light wavelength.

The Kickstarter campaign still has 19 days to go, and between the time I started writing this article and right now, it reached the million dollar mark. Clearly, my hatred of shaving the traditional way is shared by more than a handful of people.

And that, right there, is why I love technology so much. Thanks to the ingenuity of these two inventors – Morgan Gustavsson MBBS and Paul Binun – I will one day be able to shave my face with lasers.

Frickin’ lasers, man.

Well, when I can finally afford it, that is.
