- Disney Hotstar confirmed that it set a new record for the number of on-demand concurrent viewers on a streaming platform this weekend.
- The record was set during this past weekend’s India-Pakistan match.
- It surpasses the previous record of 32 million concurrent, also for a cricket match.
There are currently two world cups on the go, with the ICC Cricket World Cup being of particular note given that it set a streaming record at the weekend.
The record was set in the India-Pakistan match, Disney Hotstar confirmed, with the sport wildly popular in that part of the world, not to mention the rivalry between both nations when it comes to cricket.
The match, which India won pretty handily by seven wickets, saw 35 million concurrent viewers, set a new record for on-demand streaming.
As TechCrunch points out, the previous record was also for a cricket match, where 32 million concurrent viewers tuned into a Reliance match via the JioCinema platform.
In fact, most of the record viewerships for on-demand streaming content has been for cricket, showing just how important the feat for Disney Hotstar is, especially as it recently lost as many as 12 million subscribers in recent months.
“We would like to thank all the fans who tuned-in to watch the India-Pakistan match on Disney+ Hotstar. Your love for the game is what made it possible for Disney+ Hotstar to break all the previous records across all cricket formats and hit a peak concurrency number of 3.5 crore viewers,” noted Sajith Sivanandan, head of Disney+ Hotstar India, in a statement shared with TechCrunch.
“As the cricketing rivalries continue, we’ll continue to honour our commitment towards delivering an unmatched viewing experience to all our users. We look forward to many more such experiences as the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup unfolds,” they added.
As such, should India make it to the final of the tournament come 19th November, the record set during this weekend’s India-Pakistan match will likely be surpassed.
While the record is a nice feather in the cap for Disney Hotstar, the platform will be pushing to sign up more subscribers, as it really cannot afford to losing subscribers in the numbers it has done of late.
