- Huawei is set to launch its latest lineup of flagship phones – the Pura 70 – in South Africa.
- The news comes as Huawei Mobile SA confirmed a rebranding of its flagship series from P to Pura.
- The company’s local website has a landing page for the Pura 70, 70 Pro, and 70 Ultra, but pricing and availability are still in the offing.
Huawei is preparing to launch a new lineup of flagship phones in South Africa in the coming weeks. This as the company have been detailing a recent rebrand its well known P series to Pura, starting with the Pura 70 series.
The precise reason for the rebranding isn’t quite clear to us, especially as the P series is a lineup of phones that have traditionally performed nicely in SA, but seeing as how Huawei has both nova and Mate as its other smartphone offerings, changing its other flagship phone to a four character name might be the reason.
“This journey of P Series smartphones began in 2012 with a lineup that was dedicated to pushing the boundaries of mobile imaging and design. Now, after over a decade, this iconic camera-centric smartphone series is undergoing a transformation, reborn as the ‘Pura Series’. It’s a name change that signifies an evolution,” Huawei explains in a release shared with Hypertext.
“Pura, meaning ‘Purity,’ sets a new tone, signifying a bold fusion of fashion and technology, refined design, and an audacious vision for the future of mobile photography,” it adds.
As for the devices in question, it looks like three different models are earmarked for South Africa, if the local Huawei website is anything to go by, as landing pages are found for the Pura 70, 70 Pro, and 70 Ultra.
It would be the first time that Huawei featured three different options within a flagship series locally, and by our recollection, the first time the Ultra tag has been placed on a P series Pura phone.
In terms of specifications, this is what the new Pura 70 series phones are sporting:

At the time of writing it is unclear when the Pura 70 series will be available to purchase in SA, nor how much it will cost, given that last year’s iteration retailed for a recommended R24 999, if Huawei can keep close to that for the Ultra model, it would have a flagship phone that warrants further inspection.
With the P60 Pro we reviewed last year (featured below) having the best camera experience we can recall on a smartphone to date, the Pura 70 series, and in particular the 70 Ultra, will have a lot to live up to.
