Sonos to debut wireless headphones tomorrow?

  • Sonos has been teasing the release of a new product that it says is the “most requested” by fans of the audio brand.
  • Based on past leaks, it is expected to be the company’s first wireless headphones that will be revealed tomorrow.
  • Along with the headphones, Sonos consumers are also asking the company to address the performance of its app.

If you are a fan of Sonos products, you are likely aware that the company is preparing to launch a new device tomorrow – 21st May. The audio hardware brand has been teasing the event on social media, even spinning up an Instagram account for the occasion where it plans to reveal its “most requested product ever”.

Precisely what that product will be is yet to be confirmed, but most people familiar with the brand expect Sonos to debut its first ever pair of wireless headphones. More specifically the Sonos Ace as they have been dubbed, which have surfaced online recently following an accidental posting by one of its retail partners.

While the post has since been scrubbed, some information regarding the product has already been gleaned.

To that end, the Sonos Ace is believed to offer lossless audio playback over Bluetooth, as well as having an active noise cancelling mode that will try to go up against some other premium products in the market, namely the flagship over-ear wireless earphones offered by Apple, Sony, and Bose.

Other details unearthed about the Ace include detachable magnetic ear cup cushions, along with the ability to detect whether the headphones are on the wearer’s head to facilitate play/pause, which is pretty common these days.

Lastly it is said that the Ace will deliver up to 30 hours of battery life from a single full charge, although there is no mention of quick charging, how noise cancelling impacts battery life, or what other functionality is embedded to extend the battery.

While Sonos is preparing for the new product launch tomorrow, in terms of most requested, the company has another issue on its hands, as the recent launch of a new mobile app has not gone down well.

Here, we spotted several comments on the aforementioned Instagram post concerned more about the performance of the new app, than the prospect of the company’s first ever pair of wireless earphones.

“FIX YOUR APP. Listen to your customers. Almost every comment on here is saying how rubbish the new updated app is. Or please let us re download the older version while you iron the creases out,” one of the comments stated.

As The Verge points out, there are several missing features for the new app compared to its previous S2 app, which fans were quite happy with by all accounts. If Sonos is preparing to launch a new piece of hardware, hopefully it has fixes in place for the software it just debuted too, otherwise the Ace may fall a little flat.
