New Surface tablets on the horizon

The Verge reported yesterday that Microsoft had sent out press invitations to a Surface-related event being held on the 23rd of September in New York City. This ends speculation sparked by earlier leaks that Microsoft was indeed working on a followup to its troubled Surface tablets that launched shortly after Windows 8 last year.

Citing sources “familiar with Microsoft’s Surface plans”, The Verge received confirmation that the new Surface tablets will include an ARM-powered RT version (Surface 2) and an x86 version (Surface 2 Pro) based on Intel’s new Haswell processors, and that some models will ship with up to 8GB of system RAM.

Other developments include 1080p screens for both tablets (up from the original Surface’s 1366 x 768), NVIDIA’s Tegra 4 processor for the Surface 2 and a battery built into the tablets’ covers that will extend their battery lives. 8 hours is the expected tally.

This is all still speculation, however. It will be interesting to see if Microsoft has learned from the first generation of Surface tablets, although the inclusion of an ARM-powered tablet in this second generation seems to say that no, they haven’t. We’ll know more once the event has taken place, of course, and will be sure to keep you posted.
