Valve to redesign the Steam Controller

The Steam Controller that shipped to Valve’s hand-picked beta testers in December 2013 is going to change before their official retail availability later this year. This comes as a result of the feedback Valve received about its design, as reported by Kotaku, Joystiq, Destructoid and other gaming websites.

The original design featured two touchpads that simulated both mouse and console-style controls, but a strange button design that was nothing like those on any console controller. It also had a tiny touchscreen that had the potential to display buttons that developers could customise for their games and for displaying supplementary game-related information.

According to those sources cited above, overwhelming feedback from beta testers led Valve to announce that those oddly-positioned buttons and the screen would disappear, and instead be replaced by traditional D-pads and controller-like buttons. Valve even released a mockup of what the new design could look like:


This is being done to facilitate backwards-compatibility with existing games, as well as to ensure gamers can simply pick up the new controller and play without having to adjust to a whole new way of doing things.

A Twitter user by the name of @SteamDB tweeted an image of an unconfirmed 3D-printed “concept design” of the new controller:
