2014 marks the tenth year the Tokyo-based “game culture shop” METEOR has hosted a game-themed art expo called the My Famicase Exhibition. The art that’s on display? Real Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) game cartridges with made-up games on their covers.
It may sound a little silly, but it’s actually a brilliant showcase of some truly remarkable talent. Artists from all over the world from a wide range of disciplines are tasked with inventing the logos and back-story of their made-up games, and the results are put on display as art would be in a traditional gallery setting.
And as with all good art, many of the cartridges on show display a firm grasp of today’s social dynamics, particularly those surrounding “gaming culture”, and offer some pretty insightful (cutting, even) social commentary on a range of issues.
