Two women-owned SA startups selected as She Leads Africa finalists

Two South African startups, Night Bus and MKP Fast Foods, have made it to the final round of the She Leads Africa pitch competition and will compete with eight other African female-owned startups for the competition’s grand prize.

The finalists were announced earlier this afternoon on the She Leads Africa Instagram account.

NightBus is a safe bus service launched earlier this year that runs exclusively between major nightlife districts and universities in Johannesburg throughout the night from 19:00pm to 4:00am on Fridays and Saturdays. Trips cost just R30 for the whole night and customers get a discount on taxi fares when using Zebra Cabs.

MKP Fast Foods empowers unemployed youths by setting up mobile kitchens to operate a small grilled chicken business called Gallito’s (mostly in townships) and employing people to work in the mobile kitchens.

The other eight finalists are:

  • Afrocentric Bamboo Limited based in Kumasi, Ghana
  • Banke Kuku Textiles based in London, UK
  • Fashpa based in Lagos, Nigeria
  • Lizzie’s Creations based in Abuja, Nigeria
  • Loue 1 Voiture (Book 1 Car) based in Casablanca, Morocco
  • Mamelette based in Lagos, Nigeria
  • Rare Customs based in New York, USA
  • Thando’s based in Lagos, Nigeria

The ten finalists will be mentored by professionals that will help to refine their business plans, and develop pitch decks in time for the day of pitching in front of a panel of judges on 20th September.

The winners of She Leads Africa will walk away with $10 000 (around R100 000) for first place, $5 000 (around R50 000) for second place, consultation on brand development with the Etisalat in-house marketing team, a free business ADSL line for one year (including voice and data), SME accounting software from SmartStart Ghana, two meetings with legal advisors from a top law firm to discuss incorporation, corporate structures and copyright, meetings with two executive directors of a leading merchant bank to discuss business plans and fund-raising.
