Themes coming to the PS4 and Vita in firmware update 2.0

Love your PS4 but hate that you can’t change anything about its interface? Sony has heard your pleas and has just announced that a future firmware update will bring with it “themes” for both the PlayStation 4 and Vita that will, at the very least, change the way it looks.

The announcement took place at Sony’s pre-TGS (Tokyo Game Show) press conference that wrapped up a few hours ago. They showed off an animated theme for the PS4 starring well-known (in Japan, that is) PlayStation characters Toro and Kuro, and how the theme changed as the presenter navigated around the interface.

No more boring PS4 backgrounds.
They animate, too!

They didn’t say anything about the oft-requested option to group games with customised folders, or if the only customisation players will have access to is themes bought or downloaded for free through the PlayStation Network. At least, that’s what Joystiq reported – we tried to watch the presentation but, well, we suck at understanding Japanese.

Firmware 2.0 is coming “sometime this fall”, which is right around the corner, so hopefully within the next few weeks we won’t have to live with the PS4’s default view any longer.
