86MW solar plant in Northern Cape contract awarded

JA Solar, a Chinese photo voltaic cell manufacturer, has been named as the sole supplier of solar modules for a photo voltaic farm that will be built in the Northern Cape as part of the Orange Solar Project.

The announcement of the supplier of the cells that will be used in the project brings to an end round “4.5” of South Africa’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Program (REIPPP).

President of JA Solar, Jian Xie said in a statement, “we are honored to be awarded the winning bid in this round and are very proud of being the exclusive module supplier for this 86MW project.”

The solar farm will be built near Loeriesfontein in the Northern Cape and will generate approximately 86MW of electricity.

Solar Capital and Black Enterprise Empowerment as the partners of JA Solar, helped secure the bid for the Chinese firm. This is just one of the projects that Solar Capital has in the pipeline. During the first round of bidding for REIPPP, the company was awarded its bid to build a 90MW solar farm.

JA Solar will be supplying its high-efficiency P310W multi-crystalline silicon modules for use in the 86MW farm though its unclear whether these will be produced by its factory in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape.

“With our high-performance PV modules capable of greatly reducing the per-watt cost of electricity, JA is well positioned to provide assistance to South Africa for overcoming its energy shortage as the nation grows,” concluded Xie.

Renewable energy projects such as this go along to reducing carbon emissions. During the SONA debate last week, Minister of Energy, Tina Joematt-Pettersson said that the REIPPP would offset carbon emissions by 20%.
