Diversity in the workplace has been a hot topic for many executives over the last couple of years, and it also counts a lot towards an organisation’s BEE score with the government.
According to Ernst & Young’s (EY’s) Women in Power and Utilities Index 2016, Eskom has been doing a rather good job at diversifying its own workforce. Eskom ranked 6th on the list of the top 20 most gender-diverse Power and Utilities (P&Us) in the world.
Co-incidentally, today is also International Women’s Day.
The company also ranked 6th on the list for the top 200 P&U companies with the most gender diverse workforces in the Africa and Middle East region.
Eskom explained that five out of 13 board members are women, and that gender equity in senior management was at 29.83% for 2014/15. The target percentage for the next period however, is slightly higher, as Eskom has pegged it at 32% for 2015/16 and 45.7% for 2019/20.
The company also set itself a target of 45.7% for gender equity in professionals and middle management by 2019/20.
“We continue our commitment to cultivating a balanced workforce that will support and further our organisation in the most efficient and effective manner,”said Eskom Acting Group Executive for Human Resources Elsie Pule. ”
The employment equity plan is being implemented and racial and gender equity at senior, middle management and professional levels show significant progress over the past five years. In addition to this, Eskom has launched an Eskom Women Advancement Programme (EWAP) to drive gender equity.”
EWAP, according to the company, has been established to make specific advances for the employment of women at Eskom.
“The purpose of this programme is to create an environment conducive to unleashing women’s full potential in Eskom, a potential that has been constrained and stifled in the past, a potential that can benefit Eskom, in particular, and society, in general,” it said in a statement.
