Deputy Minister of Higher Education says overcrowding may lead to Universities deteriorating

Earlier this week the Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Buti Manamela, visited the Walter Sisulu University (WSU) and Fort Hare University campuses in East London. After the visit the Minister was concerned about the infrastructure of both universities.

“TVET colleges and universities must increase the number of students with existing infrastructure,” said Manamela to SABC News.

This visit was one of the minister’s ongoing assessment of admissions, registrations and implementation of improvements for the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) in public institutions.

According to the Minister the Department has put aside R12 billion for building and improvement of infrastructure at historically disadvantaged universities, including TVET colleges.

“Of course most of that money will be going to maintenance and renovation the existing infrastructure, we are hoping through innovation and creativity, institutions especially TVET colleges will try to ensure that students are accommodated properly,” added Manamela.

We hope to see the improvement in tertiary infrastructure as well as new institutions being built around the country, as matrics are doing their best to enter into these campuses to further their education as seen by the 2018 matric exam results which was the highest pass rate the country has seen in five years.
