First episode for final season of Game of Thrones airs 14th April

There are a number of things to look forward to in 2019, with one of them being the highly anticipated final season of Game of Thrones.

The HBO TV series has been nothing short of a cultural phenomenon, and this upcoming eighth season will mark the end of this chapter from the George R.R. Martin-inspired books.

For a long time the air date for the final season was unknown, but over the weekend, Rotten Tomatoes broke the news on Twitter with the official Game of Thrones account retweeting the confirmation.

Said tweet also included a short teaser video, embedded below, along with announcing an air date in the United States of 14th April for the first episode. We’re yet to hear when local networks will air it, but given Multichoice’s past efforts, as well as the fanfare surrounding Game of Thrones, we should see episodes arrive within a few hours of the US.

As for the video, it’s about a minute and a half long, and starts with Jon Snow walking in an underground crypt, and passing the grave of his birth mother. Next up is Sansa Stark, who also walks past a statue of her own mother, who was infamously murdered during the Red Wedding episode. Her sister Arya is next, so you can see there is a bit of theme going on here.

As such it looks like House Stark will feature heavily in the final season. This makes sense considering how much the family has gone through in the series, and we’re hoping their able to exact revenge on a number of other Game of Thrones Houses before the season is done.

The video ends with ice and mist filling up the crypt, as the three remaining Stark children ready to face the impending threat of the white walkers. Whether all three will still be standing when the series is done remains to be seen.
