Huawei youth programme helps empower women in the ICT sector

This week the world celebrated Girls in ICT Day. Taking part in the initiative was Huawei South Africa with their drive to empower women through their Graduate Programme, which encourages young women to enter the telecoms-engineering space.

According to Huawei the Graduate Programme helps to broaden and deepen skills among young professionals starting out in the industry through their bursaries and Seeds for the Future study trip to China.

“While our current projects support students at tertiary level, we are planning a bring-a-girl-child-to-work project, where we will invite girls from high schools around our business to visit our campus to view our latest technologies and hopefully inspire more women to join the sector,” said Huawei COO, Christina Naidoo.

Huawei adds that through their Graduate Programme they helped two young women, Kutloano Dipela and Marguerite Strydom, to distinguish themselves as young professionals. Dipela is a network assistant engineer and Strydom is an assistant logistic fulfilment engineer.

“We are really impressed by the commitment shown by these two women, they helped demonstrate Huawei’s belief that women have so much more to contribute to ICT. All they need is better opportunities, one can only imagine what they will achieve for our company and our industry as their careers evolve,” added Niadoo.

“The Huawei Graduate Programme is intense but it inspired me to gain knowledge. It brought home to me that to succeed, one needs to always be learning and to keep the customer at the centre of everything we do,” explained Dipela.

“Huawei Graduate Programme helped me see the humanitarian benefits of the sector. ICT can lift the spirit of community, it can also help doctors and first responders save lives and aid in the development of a country. In ICT you can be at the forefront of development and directly see the impact of your work,” noted Strydom.
