MultiChoice and Department of Arts & Culture partner on youth skills camp in Eastern Cape

MultiChoice and its local Talent Factory is currently running a workshop to upskill youth living in the Eastern Cape. The initiative is being run with the help of the Department of Arts and Culture, and is aimed at giving those interested in the film and TV industry the necessary skills and knowledge.

The three-day long training programme, which ends tomorrow 23rd January, is targeted at young creatives in the Eastern Cape in particular.

“The sustainability of the video entertainment industry in the country and on the continent depends on our ability to attract and develop fresh young talent,” explains Joe Heshu, MultiChoice group executive for corporate affairs.

“Opportunities such as this, and particularly with the support of regional government and other key industry stakeholders, provide the perfect platform to identify and nurture aspiring young filmmakers,” he adds.

The organisers note that the workshop is made up of a series of masterclasses, each led by industry experts in the field of video entertainment, and will cover several elements of filmmaking, including, scriptwriting, producing, directing, sound, lighting and cinematography.

“Film has great potential to contribute to the development of the Eastern Cape economy and as such, we have made it one of the priorities of the Department,” said Fezeka Bayeni, Eastern Cape MEC for Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture.

“The Eastern Cape has a rich heritage, great stories to be told and amazing locations for film. This partnership with Multichoice is therefore a very important platform in helping to develop and train filmmakers as part of our effort to grow the film industry in the province,” the MEC added.

Along with the aforementioned areas of focus for the workshop, MuctiChoice is also bringing experts to speak with the children involved. Speakers include Sanele Shiba, Wanda Sondiyazi (Mzansi Magic commissioning editors), Darrel Roodt (film director, screenwriter and producer) and Phathutshedzo Makwarela (scriptwriter and co-founder of Tshedza Pictures).
