Bolt Food and Mr D Food open again on 1st May, with reduced rates for restaurants

To say April has been testing would be the understatement of the decade, and yes, I am well aware that we are only four months into that decade.

On 1st May, local restaurants will be able to operate once again albeit under strict conditions. The most important of those conditions is that restaurants can only fulfill orders via delivery. No sit-down customers or collections of food by customers will be permitted.

Two delivery platforms that will be operating from 1st May are Bolt Food and Mr D Food.

“As a South African brand, we are proud to offer a crucial service during lockdown to ensure we are all doing our part to support government initiatives to promote social distancing. Delivering from restaurants, convenience stores and Checkers MediRite pharmacies on the platform is just one way we are supporting South Africans during the lockdown period while making sure they can stay indoors,” said chief executive officer at Mr D Food, Devin Sinclair.

Bolt Food and Bolt country manager in South Africa, Gareth Taylor said in a statement that the brand was determined to help restaurants deliver their orders once again, while helping drivers earn an income as well.

“This collaboration with restaurants is yet another way that the drivers using the Bolt platform can earn an income through the COVID-19 crisis – something we’ve been working hard to make possible through the launch of various new products since President Ramaphosa first announced the lockdown in March,” said Taylor.

Relief on the menu

Deliveries are not the only way Bolt Food and Mr D Food are helping local eateries. Both firms have separately announced relief measures for restaurants who make use of the respective platforms.

Bolt Food has partnered with the Restaurants Association of South Africa (RASA) to lower the commission restaurants pay on Bolt Food deliveries.

RASA members will pay a 14 percent commission while non-RASA members will pay a 15 percent commission on orders placed through the platform.

Bolt Food will also launch in Cape Town on 1st May.

Mr D Food has initiatives in place to support the restaurant industry, the first of which is commission relief.

“As a first step, we are introducing a commission relief scheme which reduces the commission rates for the vast majority of our restaurants partners. We have also allocated marketing funds to drive promotional initiatives to generate orders and revenue for neighborhood restaurants. Lastly, we will be launching a new feature in the Mr D Food app that will allow customers to support their favourite restaurants, by making a COVID-19 contribution directly to the restaurant when placing a delivery order. We believe that by working together with the industry we can help give restaurants a chance to begin to recover from the financial effects of the lockdown,” said Mr D Food’s, Devin Sinclair.

Both Mr D Food and Bolt Food will offer contactless delivery to ensure that physical distancing advice from government is adhered to.

Uber Eats

UPDATE: 01/05/2020

Uber Eats has said it will be operational as of 1st May for deliveries.

We did contact Uber Eats for word on whether it would be reopening its service. As of time of writing an Uber Eats spokesperson provided us with the statement below which isn’t clear as to whether deliveries from restaurants will resume. We will of course provide an update should this change.

“As announced by Minister of Trade and Industry, Ebrahim Patel on 25 April 2020, food delivery in South Africa is authorised to operate daily as of 1 May 2020 under restricted hours from 9am to 7pm, during level 4 of the National lockdown,” the Uber Eats spokesperson said.

“We are working to further understand the detailed restrictions put in place by the government regarding food delivery and will announce our measures in due course. The health and safety of our community comes first, and we will do our best to support our community and small businesses during these unprecedented times,” they added.

For now we recommend checking your Uber Eats app for more information regarding deliveries.
