Truecaller’s Smart SMS to filter spam messages now available in African markets

With some of the most crucial elements of PoPI coming into effect at the end of this month, you have been seeing a lot more spam and marketing text messages being sent your way over the past year. That likely isn’t set to change, which is why the new Smart SMS feature from Truecaller will be of interest.

Announced earlier in the month, now Smart SMS is available to Truecaller customers who make use of the platform in African markets.

It is a feature that customers have been asking for, and makes use of machine learning algorithms to better help users filter out the unnecessary messages from the important ones.

“The new feature Smart SMS has been introduced based on user feedback and is designed to cater to the evolving needs of our consumers. It offers a host of new services to make day-to-day communication a lot more convenient. Smart SMS is powered by state-of-the-art machine learning models that adapt based on the feedback you give it. It supports users with important messages from banks, billers, travel companies, delivery companies and so much more,” explains a press release sent to Hypertext.

With cybercrime and scams on the rise, Truecaller says Smart SMS will prove very handy in combating that too.

“Smart SMS also helps users stay protected from spam and fraud. Only the essential information within an SMS is highlighted and all SMS messages are categorised and easily accessible,” adds the company.

Those who have already downloading the app (iOS, Android and AppGallery), simply need to make sure they have updated to the latest version in order to access Smart SMS.
