COVID-19 in South Africa: 26th August 2021

As this week has progressed, the number of newly recorded infections and fatalities related to COVID-19 in South Africa has been on the rise.

The latest report from the National Department of Health (NDoH) confirms that 13 251 infections and 515 fatalities have been reported in the past 24 hours, with the latter figure proving particularly concerning. As such the country is yet to shake off the impact of the delta variant of the virus and, while we are no longer amid the surging numbers of a couple of months ago, the current statistics remain high.

Looking at the other figures in the latest report, the total number of infections recorded to date now sits at 2 722 202, while the death toll related to COVID-19 in South Africa has increased to 80 469.

The recovery rate has dropped slightly to 90.9 percent due to the increase in cases and the NDoH says over 16.16 million tests have been conducted to date.

It therefore places an even greater importance on people being vaccinated. Speaking of which, as of 17:00 on 25th August, a total of 11 363 810 vaccines have been administered so far, with 268 712 jabs given out over the past 24 hours. The estimated number of people inoculated at this stage is now 5 295 385.
