Galaxy Watch 4 series the first smartwatches to support WearOS for YouTube Music

The Galaxy Watch 4 and Watch 4 Classic that Samsung revealed earlier in the month are one of the first devices running Wear OS under Google’s re-envisioned ecosystem for smartwatches and fitness bands. As such, the devices will be sporting several firsts for the segment, with the latest being support for YouTube Music.

Google confirmed the news via a set of updated notes in the Help Center portal.

“You can listen to YouTube Music on Wear OS powered by Samsung. Enjoy music anywhere using your watch, without needing to carry a mobile device with you. Download songs to your watch so you can listen to music while offline. Leave your phone behind, and workout to your favorite songs with YouTube Music on your wrist,” it explained.

“YouTube Music currently only works on watches with Wear OS powered by Samsung. All playback from YouTube Music should be 128 kbps bitrate AAC,” it added.

Both smartwatches are set to be available to purchase Stateside come 27th August, so those in the US will be able to give the application a try before others. For SA, no official launch date has been mentioned, but we do know how much each device will cost, with the Galaxy Watch 4 and Watch 4 Classic recommended to start retailing at R4 999 and R6 999 respectively.

Apart from being a Google partner, one of the reasons why these two smartwatches were earmarked for YouTube Music support is the fact that Premium subscribers will be able to download songs straight onto the wearables, which both have 16GB of onboard storage.

Along with YouTube Music, there should be similar functionality with other music apps like Spotify, which will be supported natively, but this can only be confirmed once the devices land locally.

Hopefully we can get one in for review and share our thoughts on whether it is indeed an upgrade over its predecessor with WearOS in the mix.
