Bubble Bobble 4 Friends: The Baron’s Workshop (PC) Review – Pop some Bubbles!

Bubble Bobble 4 Friends: The Baron’s Workshop is the Steam version of 2019’s Bubble Bobble 4 Friends. Since making its way to Steam, the game has now been refined to work on PC and features a brand new “Workshop” mode where players can spend hours and hours creating their own Bubble Bobble levels.

Creative gamers will have a blast with this while the more casual will most likely ignore it.

If you’re a fan of Bubble Bobble, you’ll be glad to know that the iconic gameplay from decades ago is still heavily featured here. Bubble Bobble 4 Friends modernises the same classic formula and introduces some new mechanics which will keep you entertained.

The story mode features quite a lot of levels but given the fact that they are over within 2 to 5 minutes or less, you’ll breeze through this game in probably under 2 hours.

If you’re a completionist, you’ll want to go back and finish up the levels in the fastest time possible while also collecting the letters of the word “EXTEND”. Collecting all of these letters in a world unlocks a special ability which you can equip before diving into levels again.

Once all of this is done though, there isn’t much replayability on offer except for beating your old high scores or messing around in the workshop. Bubble Bobble 4 Friends: The Baron’s Workshop is a niche title that will appeal to fans of the Bubble Bobble franchise. It’s a classic, rather formulaic and simple game but newcomers will be able to enjoy it since it’s extremely fun.

Players will have to platform around a level while firing bubbles at enemies. You can then burst these bubbles and collect fruit and other food items for score bonuses. Each level on offer vastly differs from the last. There are some levels which are absolutely dastardly in design and require some quick thinking in order to beat them and get a high score.

Jumping around a level is incredibly easy and firing bubbles is fun. Players will be able to jump onto the bubbles they’ve fired and can then opt to stomp these bubbles out of existence or simply bounce away from them.

Enemies that have been captured in bubbles need to be defeated by bursting their bubble. This might trigger a collision with other bubbles and rack up a high score so it’s best to capture multiple enemies at once and then burst them all in one go. Boss battles round off each of the worlds in the game.

Graphically, the game looks great and the soundtrack is filled with catchy tunes including the iconic Bubble Bobble main theme albeit modernised. There’s also the entire Bubble Bobble 1 game contained within this title and that’s a great bonus for fans of the original title from 1986. Players can also play through the entirety of the game both single player or with three other players (four player co-op) for maximum chaos. It’s ridiculously fun playing this title with other people especially when bubbles are flying around everywhere.

Overall, Bubble Bobble 4 Friends: The Baron’s Workshop is a solid entry into the franchise albeit one that’s very light on content. On Steam you can at least play around with the new Workshop feature but only the hardcore fans will spend a significant amount of time with this mode. If you’re a fan of Bubble Bobble, you may want to consider picking this up. It’s a lot of good clean classic gaming fun and it’s even more fun if you play it with friends.
