Intel breaks ground on two new chip factories

Earlier this year Intel chief executive officer Pat Gelsinger announced a new foundry business was being established at the chip maker.

Dubbed Intel Foundry Services (IFS) the business will provide foundry services to any business that needs them, even competitors. At the weekend, Intel broke ground on two new factories that will be located at its Ocotillo campus.

The factories – named Fab 52 and Fab 62 – will bring the number fab factories on the campus to six and will reportedly create 3 000 high-tech, high-wage jobs, 3 000 construction jobs and 15 000 indirect jobs to the community in Chandler, Arizona.

“This $20 billion expansion will bring our total investment in Arizona to more than $50 billion since opening the site over 40 years ago. As the only U.S.-based leading-edge chipmaker, we are committed to building on this long-term investment and helping the United States regain semiconductor leadership,” Gelsinger said in a statement.

The two new fabs are expected to be fully operational in 2024 and will be capable of manufacturing Intel’s most advanced processes including Intel 20A, RibbonFET and PowerVia.

“For more than 40 years Intel has been at the center of Arizona’s innovation economy. Intel’s latest expansion promises to further that legacy for decades to come while creating thousands of jobs cementing Arizona’s position as a global leader for semiconductor manufacturing. We are grateful for Intel’s continued investment in Arizona and can’t wait to see these factories up and running,” said Arizona governor, Doug Ducey.

As mentioned by Gelsinger, this project will cost Intel $20 billion but it could be worth the investment should it bring more foundry business to the US.
