Ted and the Giant Acquisition- Netflix buys Roald Dahl Story Company

One of the authors myself and many other children were raised on was Roald Dahl. Sometimes creepy, often inspiring and always entertaining, Dahl’s works really inspired us to start reading in the first place.

Now a new generation of children and their parents will be able to experience the magic of Dahl following an acquisition of the Roald Dahl Story Company by Netflix.

“This acquisition builds on the partnership we started three years ago to create a slate of animated TV series. For example, Academy Award winning filmmaker Taika Waititi and Academy Award nominee Phil Johnston are now hard at work on a series based on the world of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. In addition, we’re working with Sony and Working Title on an adaptation of Matilda The Musical,” Netflix co-chief executive officer, Ted Sarandos said in a press release.

Netflix did not disclose the value of the acquisition.

The streaming platform says that it is committed to maintaining the unique spirit and themes that Dahl mixed into his writing particularly those of surprise and kindness.

“Netflix and The Roald Dahl Story Company share a deep love of storytelling and a growing, global fan base. Together, we have an extraordinary opportunity to write multiple new chapters of these beloved stories, delighting children and adults around the world for generations to come,” Sarandos added.

While Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and The Witches are well known properties that have been made and remade a few times, we’re curious to see what other books Netflix uses for content.

A remake of James and the Giant Peach would be welcome but we’d love an anthology series that highlights The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and the short stories contained in that book.

There’s no word on when we can expect the projects from Waititi and others, but we’ll be sure to bring news about an Roald Dahl productions coming to Netflix when we learn of them.
