Cool Ideas and MTN offer the best internet speeds – Ookla

The importance of a reliable internet connection was thrown into sharp relief throughout the pandemic but with so many internet service providers deciding which is best requires a bit of help.

There are of course more factors to consider over and above raw speed such as latency and the quality of the connection. To that end Ookla, the name behind Speedtest.net, has published its Speed Intelligence report for the third quarter of 2021.

The report covers both fixed broadband in the form of fibre and wireless mobile networks as well.

We’re going to start by looking at the fixed broadband report and there Cool Ideas wins out by a large margin. You can read how Ookla scores service providers on Speed, Consistency and more here.

As you can see when it comes to speed Cool Ideas, Afrihost and Webafrica are the best bets. We were surprised to see Telkom place so low and, spoilers, the trend persists when it comes to mobile connectivity.

When it comes to latency, Webafrica, Cool Ideas, Afrihost, Vox Telecom, Axxess and MWEB all score between 4 and 6ms. The bad news is that Telkom scored 14ms, HeroTel scored 17ms and rain had the worst latency at 26ms. If you need low latency then avoid those ISPs.

On to consistency where Cool Ideas once again comes out tops and users should enjoy “acceptable internet performance and quality”.

Mobile operators

When it comes to mobile network operators Ookla reported results for MTN, Vodacom, Telkom and Cell C.

Once again one service provider is on top by a larger margin and that provider is MTN with a Speed Score of 63.52 compared to Vodacom which scored 42.93.

Telkom came in third at 27.56 but Cell C scored the lowest at 21.91.

When it comes to latency however the tables are turned, sort of because Cell C is still the worst of the four but now Telkom has the lowest latency at 19ms.

Overall, MTN offers the most consistent experience scoring 91% for consistency and surprisingly Telkom is the next best with a score of 88.5%. Occupying the bottom of rankings are Vodacom at 85.3% and Cell C at 79.1%.

Hopefully all of the above helps you decide on which ISP is best for you whether that’s for fixed or mobile connectivity.
