COVID-19 in South Africa: 15th October 2021

It has been a particularly tough week for people across the country as we had to deal with stage 2 loadshedding from Monday to Thursday, but as we approach the weekend with the prospect of power, the spectre of COVID-19 in South Africa still looms.

That said, the daily figures are not as bad as we have seen in past weeks, with new cases remaining below the 1k mark, according to the National Department of Health (NDoH).

The latest report from the department sees the same ring true, as 947 new cases have been recorded in the past 24 hours. This has resulted in the total number of infections recorded to date climb to 2 914 827.

The NDoH also notes that 40 fatalities have been reported in the past 24 hours, as the death toll related to COVID-19 in South Africa has risen to 88 506.

Other key statistics include the recovery rate remaining at 96.2 percent, while over 18.09 million tests have been conducted so far.

Shifting to the vaccine rollout, which will hopefully see more people head to sites across the country this weekend as part of government’s latest push, the past 24 hours has seen 215 438 vaccines administered.

As of 17:00 on 14th October, a total of 19 889 964 jabs have been administered, with an estimated 10 539 458 people fully vaccinated at this stage.
