Pokémon reveals new TCG mechanic, pet contest

In the last few hours Pokémon has revealed two very different pieces of news: a new kind of trading card game (TCG) mechanic as well as a contest for sharing pictures of your pets.

The short reveal trailer below introduces us to Pokémon VSTAR, a new kind of card that has a “VSTAR Power” which can only be used once per game.

While this is new it’s oddly similar to Pokémon-GX and their GX attacks. Like VSTAR Powers, GX attacks could only be used once per game.

VSTAR Pokémon also give up two prize cards, much like Pokémon-GX did.

It’s also worth mentioning that, in the Pokémon TCG, players usually win by taking six prize cards. Another kind of Pokémon card is Pokémon VMAX which are usually the most powerful Pokémon which give up three prize cards.

It’s then odd that the new VSTARs give up one less prize card.

The first VSTAR to be revealed is Arceus VSTAR. As the upcoming game Pokémon Legends: Arceus has this as the mascot it makes sense that it was used to usher in the new mechanic. No details have been revealed about when or where Arceus VSTAR can be acquired.

For a completely different kind of reveal there’s the Super Pet Contest.

“Inspired by the Super Contest Shows from Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Pokémon Shining Pearl, we want to see your furry (or non-furry) bestie! The three categories celebrating Clever, Cute, and Cool pets are NOW accepting submissions, so prepare yourselves for the most adorable contest of all time!” reads the description.

A dedicated site can be found here which points out that the contest closes on 9th November.

Now for the unfortunate part as South Africa, an much of the world really, is not eligible to enter. Only France, Germany, the UK and the USA may enter.

That’s a real shame as the prizes include Nintendo Switch consoles, copies of Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Pokémon Shining Pearl, plushies, gift baskets and more.

It’s also a bit insulting that Pokémon recommends that those not included in the contest “enter to have fun and celebrate pets worldwide!”.
