Adele holds so much sway she got Spotify to change its UI

Adele released her latest studio album, 30, last week Friday and unsurprisingly it is doing massive numbers on all manner of media platforms.

When it comes to Spotify the lead single on the album, Easy On Me, has already racked up over 303 million plays at the time of writing and while that is an impressive number, it is not the reason why we’re reporting on the Grammy-winning singer.

Instead our focus is on the user interface of Spotify, which has changed in no small part to Adele’s input. To that end, the shuffle icon which appears below the main Green play button on album playlists is now gone.

A few eagle-eyed listeners noticed the change over the weekend, with the shuffle feature interfering with how artists intend their albums to be listened to, Adele explained on Twitter.

“This was the only request I had in our ever changing industry! We don’t create albums with so much care and thought into our track listing for no reason,” she said.

“Our art tells a story and our stories should be listened to as we intended. Thank you Spotify for listening,” Adele listened.

We have to agree with the British songstress here, especially as album playlists are tinkered with and mulled over incessantly by artists before an album is released. Just think about how different Kanye West’s Yeezus would have been if the lead single was Blood on the Leaves and not On Sight, as Ye had originally intended.

The change now means that along with album playlists, algorithm-generated daily mixes, as well as those curated by Spotify itself, do not feature the button either.

It just goes to show that Adele has plenty of pull when it comes to how her music is listened to.
